Plume poppy (macleya microcarpa) herb contains a series of isoquinoline alkaloids, mostly sanguiritrin, chelerythrine, protopine and allocryptopine. Sanguiritrin was proven to stimulate intestinal activity when tested on animals. Under the influence of alkaloids intestines tonus was improved, and the amplitude of colon contractile waves became increased. Sanguiritrin effect on isolated organs lasted for 50 - 60 minutes and more, and moreover, it had a tonic effect on a gravid uterus.
